Starting your Job Search

With the market as it is today – with so much information and sources of advice out there – you must be focused on your job search and ensure that you take all the necessary steps to make it happen whilst covering all the bases.


If you are currently between roles, then you should treat finding a new job as a full-time job.

If you have been made redundant for example, it may be tempting to take 3-12 months off and then look for a job; however, if you get a job lined up and then take time off, you get to keep all the money you have earned in redundancy!


Prepare your campaign strategy and toolkit using this book but also get yourself organised for your job search: sort out a home office space, set up files, write a time programme and get everything ready.


Targets

Set targets but be realistic - it may easily take 3-9 months to find your next role. The average recruitment project for a manager or director could be 4-6 months so do not expect fast results and do not get down hearted. You cannot alter the timescale of a recruitment project.


Targets can include both short and long term, such as landing an interview this month, and a date by when you want to secure your next role. Don’t forget to track your applications so you can see your progress.

 

If it all goes to plan you will find your next role.

 

However, do not accept the first role offered if it does not feel right or does not match your long-term goals - you have time.


 Checklist


·         Organise your home office

·         Set up a dedicated email address (make sure it has a business/professional name)

·         Get a personal mobile phone if you only have a work one

·         Print some personal business cards with your contact details including your job/function title

·         Fill up your toolkit!

·         Decide on the next role you want, what type of company you want to work for, minimum salary, location etc

·         Organise your networking programme, both on-line and off-line, and speak to every businessperson you know socially to let them know you are available. Give them a business card

·         Register with every suitable recruitment firm you can find

·         Write to companies that you would like to work for and that are in your target sector

·         Check all internet job sites once a week

·         Set realistic targets - such as ten applications a week, the first interview within three weeks then three interviews a week etc

·         Develop a system of follow ups to ensure that you miss nothing

·         Monitor your progress weekly and monthly

·         Prepare for interviews
