Nautical Specialist

Location: London
Salary: £60-85,000 plus full benefits

The position is within the Ports and Rail Engineering Unit of this Civil Infrastructure Business based in London. The unit provides services to all business lines within the company including Mining and Metals, Oil Gas and Chemicals as well as its parent business lines Civil Infrastructure and Rail. The Unit’s primary focus is to undertake feasibility studies for port and rail infrastructure to support projects around the globe. On completion of the feasibility and selection of the preferred option by its clients the unit performs the front end engineering design (FEED) before transitioning the detail design to one of our global execution centres.

This senior position will report directly to the Area Ports Manager and will work within a team of port and marine related disciplines to support business development and the execution of studies and FEED for projects around the world.

Key Responsibilities
- Provide support to the Ports Area Team on all relevant nautical issues related to port planning and design for sea going traffic, including safe navigation, vessel behaviour, ship’s dimensions and related infrastructure requirements, according to best practice methodologies, in close cooperation with the (potential) users in a timely and efficient manner;
- Translate various options into feasible solutions by means of expert opinion and/or mathematical modelling and traffic simulation;
- Assist in the development of proposals;
- Plan, program and manage the resources applied such that agreed project objectives of quality, schedule and profitability will be achieved
- Prepare, submit and present papers at industry conferences and publishing in relevant trade journals and magazines from time to time
- Support the development of Nautical expertise in its Ports capabilities
- Maintain and support ongoing business relationships with key clients and customers;

Skills and Experiences
- (Master) Mariner or related Maritime/Navigation Engineering or Port Operations degree
- Substantial experience in the maritime sector, with proven international expertise in the field of sea going traffic, safe navigation, manoeuvring, all related shipping operations (towage, etc), developments in the shipping industry, etc.
- Knowledge of relevant ISPS matters and regulations;
- Understanding or knowledge of shipping related environmental matters and regulations, international conventions, etc
- Understanding of or interested in port master planning;
- Thorough understanding of maritime traffic simulation and related mathematical modelling;
- Previous experience in an international environment;
- Commercial and technical acumen
- Self starter with strong communication skills both verbal and written
- The ability to lead a team of external and internal resources
