Design Engineer

Location: London
Salary: £60-85,000 plus full benefits

The position is within the Ports and Rail Engineering Unit of this Civil Infrastructure Business based in London. The unit provides services to all business lines within the company including Mining and Metals, Oil Gas and Chemicals as well as its parent business lines Civil Infrastructure and Rail. The Unit’s primary focus is to undertake feasibility studies for port and rail infrastructure to support projects around the globe. On completion of the feasibility and selection of the preferred option by its clients the unit performs the front end engineering design (FEED) before transitioning the detail design to one of the global execution centres.

This senior position will report directly to the Area Ports Manager and will work within a team of port and marine related disciplines to support business development and the execution of studies and FEED for projects around the world.

Key Responsibilities
- Design of all on shore structures such as on shore crane facilities, utilities, storage facilities (tanks, warehouses), pavements, etc according to applicable standards, in close cooperation with the (potential) end users, in terms of operational, environmental and technical requirements to budget and schedule
- Translate various design options into feasible solutions;
- Maintain and support ongoing business relationships with key clients and customers;
- Assist in the development of proposals to customers;
- Plan, program and manage the resources applied such that agreed project objectives of quality, schedule and profitability will be achieved

Skills and Experiences
- Professional qualifications in Civil/Structural Engineering and related engineering degree
- Substantial experience in the ports and maritime sector, with proven international expertise in the planning, design and delivery of onshore port structures, including on shore crane support facilities, utilities, storage facilities (tanks, warehouses), pavements and other related structures;
- Understanding of the interactive port master planning process;
- Knowledge of operational conditions, related loads due to crane operations, ship’s loaders and other equipment (straddle carriers, reach stackers, etc), berthing forces and other port and port site operations related loads;
- Understanding or knowledge of traffic and logistics related solutions (tracks, crossings) with respect to  hinterland connections (IWT, road and rail);
- Knowledge of geotechnical aspects of these projects;
- Previous experience in an international consulting or contracting environment
- Self starter with strong communication skills both verbal and written;
- The ability to lead a team of external and internal resources.
