Area Manager - Ports

Based: London
Salary: £90,000 plus full benefits

The position is within the Ports and Rail Engineering Group of this Civil Infrastructure Business based in London. This Group provides services to all business lines within the company including Mining and Metals, Oil Gas and Chemicals as well as its parent business lines Civil Infrastructure and Rail. The Group’s primary focus is to undertake feasibility studies for port and rail infrastructure to support projects around the globe. On completion of the feasibility and selection of the preferred option by its clients the Group performs the front end engineering design (FEED) before transitioning the detail design to one of the global execution centres.

This senior position will report directly to the Group Manager and will work within a team of port and marine related disciplines to support business development and the execution of studies and FEED for projects around the world.

Key Responsibilities
- manage, coordinate and administer the port and related civil engineering aspects of any project to be dealt with by this group. During subsequent study or project phases the Port Area Manager must be able to manage all phases, including start-up, process, planning, engineering, procurement, related site visit activities and phased outputs from the designated Port Area & Civil team. The work may include management of external port & civil consultants under a subcontract arrangement.
- maintain and support ongoing business relationships with key clients and support communications and presentations to the customers of ongoing projects.
- in coordination with the other Area Managers and the nominated project controls manager to support the development of budgets and schedules, manage performance, report progress and initiate actions to assure program/project objectives and schedules are met and work is performed within budget and according to specifications and company/Customers procedures.
- resolve issues and coordinate with projects’ customers to ensure that the technical elements of the project meet the requirements of the prime contract in a satisfactory manner.
- provide leadership for the development and maintenance of a high performance project team.
- responsible for the port elements of the schedule and project execution, ensuring that project is delivered within contract requirements, standards of quality and safety and to Customer and company performance expectations
- in coordination with other responsible managers, oversee the Environmental, Safety & Health program for both the office and field work environments including project team and subcontractor activities. Also that any design prepared is in accordance with ES&H laws and regulations applicable along with the company and the projects (in-country) requirements.
- assist Business Development in expanding current work scope, developing proposal technical and pricing strategies and preparing proposal execution strategies/plans.
- support the development of expertise in our Ports capabilities

Skills and Experiences
- Civil Engineering degree or equivalent (transport or economics) plus a professional qualification in this field.
- Proven management qualities and capabilities in this field of expertise
- Substantial experience in the maritime sector, with proven international expertise in port masterplanning, planning and design of port layouts, port operations and the planning and design of related marine structures;
- experience in an international consulting or contracting environment.
- Knowledge of and experience with port master planning, including port and terminal operations;
- Exposure to or knowledge of dredging and geotechnical aspects of maritime projects;
- Self starter with commercial and technical acumen ;
- Have led a team of internal and external resources.
